Joseph G. Thresher, Esquire earned his undergraduate B.S. in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1968.After serving two years in the military as an Army Artillery officer, he returned to the University of Wisconsin for law school. Mr. Thresher graduated cum laude from University of Wisconsin Law School in 1973 and was admitted to practice law in Florida in the same year. Mr. Thresher performed exceptionally on the Florida Bar exam and spoke on behalf of the 1973 inductees at the swearing in ceremony at the Second District Court of Appeal in Lakeland. Mr. Thresher is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida and the State of Florida courts.
Mr. Thresher is a member of the American Bar Association. He is a member of the Torts and Insurance Practice Section, the Surety section, and the ABA Forum Committee on Construction. Mr. Thresher is a member of the Florida Bar Association, the Hillsborough County Bar Association and Associate Member of the American Institute of Architects. He has served on Government Contract Committees and the Florida Bar Technology in the Law Committee. Mr. Thresher is Board Certified by the Florida Bar in Construction Law.
Mr. Thresher started practice with Shackleford, Farrior, Stallings & Evans in 1973. He left that firm with several other shareholders to start the Tampa office of Dykema Gossett in 1988. Mr. Thresher started his own law firm in January 1993 dedicated to serving clients involved in the construction industry.
Mr. Thresher has presented papers on behalf of The Florida Bar, the University of Florida Law School and its School of Construction, and various industry associations for general contractors, subcontractors, government contract administrators, construction lenders, construction sureties, and others on various topics involving law applicable to the construction industry and the surety industry.
Mr. Thresher has lectured at construction law seminars sponsored by National Business Institute, Lorman Education Services, the Hillsborough County Bar Association, and others.
Mr. Thresher has represented nearly every segment of the construction industry in litigation, arbitration, mediation, and a variety of administrative proceedings before local, state and federal agencies on matters involving environmental permitting, bidding, contract negotiations and claims. Clients have included general contractors, design firms, governments, developers, most subcontract trades and distributors and design-build firms in many different markets including office towers, amusement and resort development, sports complexes, shopping centers, clinics and hospitals, apartments and condominiums, subdivisions, single and multi-family residential, schools, churches, power line and right-of-way, cement plant and electrical cogeneration facilities, phosphate fertilizer plants, underground utilities, marine construction and dredging, road and bridge builders.
Subcontractor clients include specialties in site work, masonry, drywall and stucco, glass and curtain wall, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, insulation, painting, roofing, steel fabrication and erection, steam fitters and boilermakers, and various cement, concrete products and precast suppliers and erectors, and distributor clients in electrical, lumber, insulation, tile and ceramics, glass products, metal specialties, pipe and pumping equipment, and many other products.
Clients include design professionals in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, fire-sprinkler and safety design/installation, and survey. Other clients have include government agencies as owners, private developers, construction lenders, casualty insurers, sureties, manufacturers, equipment rental firms and various materials suppliers.
John J. Thresher, Esquire was born and raised in Tampa, Florida and has deep roots in the community. He earned his undergraduate BA in Business and Finance from Florida Southern College, Lakeland, Florida in 1998, where he was a four year scholarship athlete in baseball. John was a Member of the NCAA Athletic Advisory Committee, an Academic All-American Southern Region for Baseball, a Member of the 1995 National Championship Baseball Team and the Florida Southern Baseball Team Captain in 1998.
Following undergraduate school, Mr. Thresher attended and graduated from Stetson University College of Law, where he was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honor society and Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.
John was admitted to practice law in Florida in April 2001. Following in his father's footsteps, he received a top score on The Florida Bar exam and was invited to speak on behalf of the 2001 inductees at the Swearing in Ceremony at the Second District Court of Appeal in Lakeland, Florida.
John became the second attorney at the firm board certified by the Florida Bar in Construction Law in July 2009.
John Thresher is a member of the American Bar Association; The Florida Bar, and Hillsborough County Bar Association.
John Thresher clerked for the Law Firm of Joseph G. Thresher, P.A. for three years before joining the firm as an associate in December 2000. During those years, John Thresher's experience included work in construction, design and contract surety.
Since being admitted to the bar, John Thresher has limited his practice to matters involving construction and surety law. He has significant experience in lien foreclosure actions, payment and performance bond claims, indemnity actions, construction defect matters, and scheduling/delay issues. He has actively participated in preparing complex cases for trial, and has handled multiple arbitrations from institution through final hearing. He has experience in all aspects of civil litigation including drafting pleadings, motions and discovery, taking depositions, oral argument, mediation and drafting appeals.
John Thresher has authored seminar materials on design and construction law issues, liens, surety bonds, contract drafting, and alternative dispute resolution. John Thresher has spoken at, and remains an active speaker for, various Lorman Education Services seminars related to Construction Law.
Michael Kamprath joined Thresher P.A. as an associate in December, 2007. Mr. Kamprath is admitted to practice in all of the state courts of Florida and Alabama. Mr. Kamprath is also admitted to practice in the United States Middle District and Northern District of Florida and the United States Southern District, Middle District and Northern District of Alabama. In May 2005, Mr. Kamprath received a J.D. from the University of Florida, magna cum laude. The main focus of Mr. Kamprath’s practice includes Construction and Surety Law as well as Environmental, Land Use and Eminent Domain matters.
Mr. Kamprath attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where he received bachelors degrees in Economics and Civil Engineering and a Masters degree in Civil Engineering. He conducted his research for his masters degree at the University of Western Ontario’s Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory. He spent a year in Sydney Australia. While in law school, Mr. Kamprath conducted legal research for a summer at the Virginia Transportation Research Council at the University of Virginia; worked for Professor Michael Wolf; assisted the Conservation Clinic at the Center for Governmental Responsibility establish a plan for municipalities to create managed mooring fields; and helped set up the methodology for a survey of local boating regulations in Florida being conducted by Florida Sea Grant and the Center for Governmental Responsibility.
Mr. Kamprath has tried cases in state circuit court and Florida Division of Administrative Hearings. Mr. Kamprath also has also successfully resolved cases through alternative dispute resolution processes including mediation and arbitration.
Mr. Kamprath previously was associated with Barron, Redding, Hughes, Fite, Sanborn, Kiehn & Dickey in Panama City, Florida where he served as co-chair of the local Race Judicata, a 5k event for charity.
